It all began with the dream of finding a golf outfit that not only respected the country club dress code but was fashionable, figure flattering and would allow enough room to swing a club. After countless hours toiling through pro shops, boutiques, and online stores, Sharon Sunoo realized that such an outfit didn’t exist for her, it was a mere pipedream. She was not alone in this predicament. Many of her fashion savvy friends shared in the very same frustration of enjoying a round of golf but not so much enjoying the attire that accompanied the sport. Ms. Sunoo soon began to question why the female demographic was not being represented in the golf apparel industry when the sport's popularity amongst women seemed to be growing at a rapid rate. The answer was simple: The once stodgy golf game that was thought of as a gentlemen's sport has evolved into a game for both sexes. To fill this void, Ms. Sunoo created Birdy & Grace in 2007 with the help of Teress Stephens, designer and partner. Birdy & Grace is a golf wear line that is made for women by women who care about the way they look both on and off the golf course. "I only design and make clothes that I would wear myself. My style, sensibility, lifestyle and need for detail in clothing are the cornerstones to the designs of Birdy & Grace. I love the classic look but I can also be slightly rebellious in taste. I am trend conscientious but never too trendy." Birdy & Grace's designs incorporate functionality and a flattering fit due to the use of terrific fabrics, the attention to design and cut of each piece. "Everything is geared towards making our customer feel and look 5 pounds lighter. Pocket placement, length of plackets, incorporating novel details, choice of colors of our clothes all flatter the woman's body whether she is playing golf or not." It is this design ethic which separates Birdy & Grace from its competitors. "I am not interested in making what I call disposable golf wear for women. There is enough out there already. I wanted to make things that women could wear if they were golfing or not. I love wearing our fun, crystal placket shirt with a pair of slim jeans and flats when I run into town to meet friends for lunch. I believe that women don't need a lot to maximize their wardrobe…it is in the select pieces that properly enhance a closet."
